Headline Alert: Fremantle Traffic Bridge Full Closure

Today, Sunday, 1 February 2026, marks one of the most significant changes to the Perth metropolitan road network in recent history. The iconic, 90-year-old Fremantle Traffic Bridge has officially closed to all vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist traffic this morning. This closure is expected to remain in place for up to 12 months as part of the Swan River Crossings project, which will see the construction of a new four-lane bridge and upgraded pedestrian facilities.

Main Roads WA has warned that this closure will have a severe impact on the surrounding road network, particularly during peak periods. Stirling Highway is now the primary alternative for north-south travel across the river. While traffic volumes may be lighter on this first Sunday of the closure, commuters are urged to use today to familiarize themselves with detour routes before the Monday morning rush. Intersections surrounding the bridge, including several on Stirling Highway, have been modified with new traffic monitoring devices to help manage the expected congestion.

Public Transport: Transperth Service Changes Effective Today

To mitigate the impact of the bridge closure, Transperth has implemented several service changes that take effect today, Sunday, 1 February. Commuters should take note of the following updates:

  • Fremantle Line: A new timetable has commenced today to improve connectivity and support the influx of passengers opting for rail over road travel.
  • Free Travel Zone: A new free travel zone has been established along South Terrace between Douro Road and Fremantle Station to encourage the use of local bus services.
  • Fremantle Station Parking: In a major incentive for rail users, 100 additional parking bays have been added to Fremantle Station. Furthermore, parking is now free for passengers using a SmartRider.
  • Bus Network: Comprehensive changes to several bus routes and school services also begin today. Passengers are advised to check the Transperth app for updated departure times for their specific routes.

Ongoing Rail and Road Disruptions

Beyond the Fremantle area, other significant works continue to impact travel across Perth this Sunday. The Midland Line remains shut down between Bassendean and Midland stations as part of ongoing METRONET works; this disruption is scheduled to continue until late February. Replacement bus services are in operation, but commuters should allow for at least 20 minutes of additional travel time.

In the CBD, motorists should be aware of ongoing nightworks on Newcastle Street. Intersections at William Street and Beaufort Street are subject to nightly closures from 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM, including this evening. Detours are in place via Lindsay Street and Money Street.

Commuter Advice for Sunday and the Week Ahead

With the Fremantle Traffic Bridge now out of action, the State Government and transport authorities are encouraging a "rethink your travel" approach. If possible, consider carpooling, utilizing the newly expanded public transport options, or traveling outside of traditional peak hours. Stay updated with real-time alerts via the Live Traffic WA app to navigate these significant network changes.
