Midland Line Shutdown and New Tonkin Highway Works to Impact Monday Commute

Perth Traffic and Commute Update: Monday, 9 February 2026
Good morning, Perth. Commuters are advised to plan for a challenging start to the work week as several major METRONET projects and road infrastructure upgrades reach critical phases today, Monday, 9 February 2026. From significant rail shutdowns to new utility works on major arteries, here is what you need to know before heading out.
Major Rail Disruptions: Midland Line Shutdown
The biggest impact on public transport remains the ongoing Midland Line shutdown. Trains are currently cancelled between Bassendean and Midland stations to facilitate the final stages of the new Midland Station project. Replacement bus services are in operation, but commuters should allow at least an extra 20 to 30 minutes for their journey. Full rail services are not expected to resume until later this month.
- Nightly Closures: Be aware that starting tonight, nightly disruptions will affect the Airport, Ellenbrook, and Midland lines. Services will be restricted from Perth to High Wycombe, Ellenbrook, and Midland from approximately 9:00 PM.
- Fremantle Line: Additional weekday services are running during peak periods to help alleviate pressure following recent road changes in the Fremantle area.
Roadworks Alert: Tonkin Highway and Hale Road
Drivers using the eastern corridor will notice new activity today. Western Power relocation works are officially commencing this morning along Hale Road. This is a vital step for the Tonkin Highway Corridor upgrade and will result in the following:
- Intermittent lane closures and strict speed restrictions on Hale Road on both sides of Tonkin Highway.
- Potential delays for those heading toward the airport or Forrestfield industrial areas.
Further south, the Tonkin Highway Extension project is in a high-activity phase. Heavy vehicle haulage operations are running day and night near the Thomas Road intersection. Expect a high volume of trucks entering and exiting the site between Abernethy Road and Bishop Road.
Fremantle Traffic Bridge Remains Closed
A reminder for southern suburb commuters that the Fremantle Traffic Bridge remains closed to all vehicles. All traffic is being diverted to the Stirling Highway Bridge, which is experiencing significant congestion during peak morning and afternoon hours. Transperth has implemented a Free Fremantle Transit Zone and provided additional station parking to encourage residents to use the rail network instead of driving through the city center.
Speed Zone Reminders
Motorists are urged to stick to the reduced 60 km/h speed limits currently in place on Tonkin Highway between Rowley Road and Thomas Road, as well as on Thomas Road between Masters Road and Kargotich Road. These zones are heavily monitored to ensure the safety of construction crews working on the Byford Rail Extension and road duplication projects.
