Public Health Advisory: Meningococcal Disease Update
The Western Australian Department of Health has issued an updated advisory following the notification of four recent cases of meningococcal disease. While the department confirms these cases are not linked and do not currently indicate a broader outbreak, all have been identified as the type B strain. Residents are urged to remain vigilant for symptoms, which can include high fever, chills, headache, neck stiffness, and a distinctive spotty red-purple rash. Because the disease can progress with extreme speed, health officials advise seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
Road and Infrastructure Projects
Several major roadworks and infrastructure projects are active across the metropolitan area this Wednesday. Commuters should plan for the following disruptions:
- Newcastle Street, Perth: Temporary night-time closures remain in effect from 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM for bus turning modification works. Impacted areas include the intersections of William Street and Beaufort Street. Detours are in place via Lindsay and Money Streets.
- East Perth School Precinct: Ongoing road and path closures are active on Waterloo Crescent, Horatio Street, and Nelson Crescent to facilitate enabling works for the new East Perth Primary School. These restrictions are scheduled to remain in place until 8 February.
- Roe Highway, East Cannington: Southbound roadworks are scheduled to commence tonight, 4 February, at 10:00 PM between Rivervale and the Wattle Grove Link. Restrictions will remain until early morning on 6 February.
- Morrison Road, Midland: The level crossing at Morrison Road is currently closed to all vehicles to facilitate METRONET construction for the new Midland Station. This closure is expected to continue through late February.
- South Perth Footpath Works: Footpath slab replacement continues on the South Perth Esplanade between Fraser Lane and Queen Street. Works are conducted daily between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Emergency Services and Bushfire Safety
Following recent extreme heat and emergency fire activity south of the city, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) reminds all residents to maintain a high state of readiness. While firefighters have worked to contain blazes in the Casuarina and Bullsbrook areas, localized road closures—including sections of the Tonkin Highway—may still be subject to change based on conditions. The community is encouraged to monitor the Emergency WA platform for real-time updates and to ensure that bushfire survival plans are active and ready to be implemented.
Community Events and Park Activations
The "Illuminate the Journey" 10-day community celebration continues today at the Oats Street Station precinct in Long Park. This METRONET-sponsored activation features nightly light installations, including interactive video cubes and a "rainbow walk," alongside food trucks and youth sporting zones. The event is free to the public and will run through Sunday, 8 February.
