Inner City Road Closures and Traffic Management

Commuters heading through the Perth CBD and inner suburbs this Wednesday, 18 March 2026, should prepare for several planned road closures that may impact travel times. The City of Perth has confirmed that Walker Avenue in West Perth remains closed today as part of a week-long project running until 20 March. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes via Hay Street or Kings Park Road to avoid local congestion.

In the Crawley area, the 'Cool Roads Program' is in full effect today. Various local roads are subject to daily closures between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. These works are scheduled to continue through 21 March, and while local access is being maintained where possible, through-traffic should expect significant diversions. Additionally, in East Perth, Brown Street and several surrounding roads are currently closed for infrastructure maintenance, with these restrictions expected to remain in place until early next week.

Mitchell Freeway and Major Arteries

Traffic flow on the Mitchell Freeway is being affected by the commencement of major upgrade works this month. Motorists using the northbound off-ramp to Neerabup Road should note that the ramp has been reduced to a single lane. This is part of a pinch-point program designed to install a new direct left-turn lane. Speed reductions are in place, and peak-hour delays are expected as the interchange reaches its capacity.

Further south, pedestrians and cyclists using the Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path (PSP) between Leederville and Northbridge will encounter detours. Upgrades to widen and resurface the path began earlier this month. Commuters using e-scooters or bicycles are encouraged to follow the posted wayfinding signage as they are diverted onto local road networks.

In Stirling, the Stephenson Avenue Extension project continues to progress. Cedric Street is undergoing staged tie-in works, and the northern footpath remains closed. Pedestrians are being diverted to the southern side of the street. While the new Stephenson Avenue bridge is operational, minor lane restrictions are occurring daily as crews complete finishing works near the Stirling Station precinct.

Public Transport and Rail Network

Transperth passengers are reminded that the new simplified fare structure is now in its third month of operation. Under the 'Go Anywhere' initiative, all travel across the metropolitan network is capped at a flat rate of $2.80 for SmartRider users with Autoload. This remains one of the most cost-effective ways to commute into the city, especially with the current road closures in West Perth.

On the rail network, all lines are reporting a smooth start to the morning. The Midland Line is operating at full capacity following the grand opening of the new Midland Station last month. Commuters on the Armadale and Byford lines are also seeing regular service intervals following the full completion of the METRONET elevation projects late last year. No major service disruptions have been reported for the Wednesday morning peak.
