Local Governments Convene for Special Development Sessions

Several local government authorities across the Perth metropolitan area are scheduled to hold significant sessions today, Monday, 23 March 2026, to address pressing development and policy matters. These meetings come as the region continues to navigate infrastructure growth under the administration of Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds, who took office following the transition of former Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas to state politics.

In the Town of Victoria Park, a Special Council Meeting has been convened for 6:30 PM tonight at the Council Chambers on Shepperton Road. The primary purpose of this session is the consideration of a major development application for the Perth Park project. Chief Executive Officer Carl Askew issued the public notice for the meeting, which is expected to draw interest from local residents and stakeholders concerned with inner-city land use and community amenities.

Simultaneously, the City of Armadale is holding its full Council Meeting at 7:00 PM. This session follows last week's committee reviews and will focus on several key agenda items, including:

  • William Street Development: Council will vote on a request for restricted vehicular access to 43 William Street via a City-owned car park, a move that aims to balance staff parking needs with pedestrian safety.
  • Planning Policy Amendments: A vote is scheduled regarding minor updates to Local Planning Policy PLN 3.10, which governs residential and commercial design standards within the district.

Terrorism Plot Suspect Returns to Perth Magistrates Court

Beyond local council chambers, the state’s judicial and security apparatus is focused on a high-profile appearance at the Perth Magistrates Court today. A 20-year-old man from Bindoon is scheduled for a mention following his arrest in late February. The suspect was charged by the Western Australia Joint Counter Terrorism Team for allegedly planning a series of racially motivated attacks targeting significant landmarks, including the WA Police Headquarters and Parliament House.

The case has drawn significant attention from Premier Roger Cook’s government, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding extremist activity and the security of public buildings in the capital. Today’s appearance is expected to determine the next steps for a potential trial date later this year.

State Government Administrative Deadlines

Today also marks a critical deadline for several state-managed employment initiatives. Applications for the "Solid Futures" Aboriginal traineeship program, run by the Public Sector Commission, close at the end of business today. Additionally, the Department of Housing and Works will conclude its intake for the 2027 Graduate Program, which serves as a primary pipeline for new public administration talent in Western Australia.
