Public Health Alert: Measles Advisory Issued

The Western Australian Department of Health has issued an active health alert following the identification of multiple measles cases in the metropolitan area. Dr. Paul Armstrong, Director of the Communicable Disease Control Directorate, has confirmed that the virus is currently circulating within the community. Residents are advised to be vigilant for symptoms including fever, tiredness, runny nose, and a cough, typically followed by a red blotchy rash starting on the face.

Health officials emphasize that measles is highly infectious and can be spread through airborne droplets. Those who visited potential exposure sites are urged to monitor their health for up to 18 days. The Department recommends that anyone born during or after 1966 ensures they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine. Free vaccinations are available through local clinics and GPs for those who are unsure of their immunization status.

New Health Navigation Initiative: Access Health WA

In preparation for the 2026 winter season, the State Government has officially launched the 'Access Health WA' campaign. This initiative is designed to assist Perth residents in navigating the healthcare system more efficiently. The program provides clear guidance on when to visit an Emergency Department versus utilizing urgent care clinics, general practitioners, or community pharmacists. This strategy aims to reduce pressure on major hospitals and improve patient flow across the metropolitan region.

Road Closures and Major Infrastructure Works

The City of Perth continues its program of essential infrastructure upgrades this week. A major long-term road closure remains in effect on Telethon Avenue, between Milligan Street and the city center, which is expected to continue through August 2026. Motorists should plan for detours and allow extra travel time when navigating the western end of the CBD.

Additionally, the City is currently overseeing several lighting and structural remediation projects. Key areas of focus this weekend include the Council House structural remediation and lighting upgrades along Victoria Avenue and Riverside Drive. These works are part of the broader 'City of Light' enhancement program to improve safety and visibility in public spaces.

Community Project: Mardalup Park Upgrades

The City of Perth has progressed to the construction phase for the new public toilet facilities at Mardalup Park. This project is intended to improve amenities for park users and local residents. While construction is underway, certain sections of the park may have limited access. This project follows the commencement of major upgrades at Supreme Court Gardens, which include the installation of a new community stage and improved landscaping to support future public events.

Resilient Australia Awards Nominations

The State Emergency Management Committee has announced that nominations are now open for the 2026 Resilient Australia Awards. This program recognizes local initiatives that strengthen community preparedness for disasters and emergencies. Residents and community groups in Perth are encouraged to submit projects that demonstrate innovation in building local resilience and fostering safer, more connected neighborhoods.
