Public Health Alert: Measles Advisory for Greater Perth

WA Health has issued an active health alert following the identification of multiple measles cases in Western Australia during the first quarter of 2026. As of March 9, 2026, the alert remains in effect for the Perth metropolitan area and regional hubs. Health officials report that measles is highly infectious and can be spread through airborne droplets. Symptoms typically manifest approximately 10 days after exposure, though the incubation period can range from 7 to 18 days.

Residents are advised to monitor for symptoms, which include fever, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a red, blotchy rash. The Director of Communicable Disease Control urges individuals born after 1965 to ensure they have received two doses of the measles-containing (MMR) vaccine. Local medical practices and public health units are on standby to provide vaccinations to those who are not yet immune.

Infrastructure and Roadway Improvements

The City of Perth has authorized a series of major infrastructure works and obstruction permits for the week commencing Monday, 9 March 2026. These works are part of the city’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality public spaces and safe thoroughfares. Commuters should expect minor delays and localized traffic management in various sectors of the CBD as teams carry out essential maintenance and upgrades.

  • Anstey Street Crossing: Starting Monday, 9 March, construction will begin on a new pedestrian zebra crossing at the intersection of Anstey and Angelo Streets. This project aims to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility in the South Perth precinct.
  • Supreme Court Gardens: Work continues on the major upgrade of the Supreme Court Gardens event space. The installation of the new Lotterywest Community Stage is currently underway, with parts of the gardens restricted to public access to ensure safety during the construction phase.
  • General Obstructions: Routine utility inspections and minor road repairs are scheduled throughout the week. Motorists are encouraged to follow all posted signage and directions from traffic controllers.

Urban Planning and Special Control Areas

Official notices from the Government Gazette highlight new regulatory measures for the Northbridge precinct. Effective from March 2026, the Northbridge Special Entertainment Precinct has been designated as a Special Control Area under the City Planning Scheme No. 2. These provisions are designed to manage noise levels and operational standards for venues while supporting the area’s vibrant nightlife. Development applications within this zone must now adhere to specific construction and acoustic standards to ensure the sustainable growth of the entertainment district.

Additionally, the City of Perth has recently endorsed the 'Shaping Perth City Centre Towards 2036' framework. Residents are invited to view the draft plans at Council House, which outline future connections between the Swan River and Kings Park, ensuring a climate-resilient and connected capital city for the coming decades.
