Nightly Freeway Closures and Public Transport Shifts Impacting Perth Commuters
Major Roadworks and Freeway Updates
Commuters heading north today should be aware of significant night-time activity on the Mitchell Freeway. As part of the ongoing Stephenson Avenue Extension project, Main Roads WA has scheduled nightly closures for the northbound on-ramp from Hutton Street starting this evening, Tuesday, 3 March. These works are expected to run from 7:00 pm until 5:00 am. Additionally, the northbound section between Stephenson Avenue and Cedric Street will also experience closures during the same window. Motorists are advised to follow signed detours and allow extra travel time if moving through the Stirling area late tonight.
In the southern suburbs, the Tonkin Highway remains a focus for major upgrades. Commuters using Hale Road should expect intermittent lane closures and speed restrictions as utility crews continue relocating powerlines to make way for the upcoming grade separations at Welshpool and Hale Roads. Furthermore, a permanent speed reduction to 60km/h is in effect on Tonkin Highway between Rowley Road and Thomas Road to support the Stage Three Extension and Thomas Road upgrades.
In Northbridge, local traffic will be impacted by scheduled road closures on James Street and William Street today. These closures are expected to affect both through-traffic and local bus routing during the day, so drivers should seek alternative routes through the CBD where possible.
Public Transport and Rail Alerts
Transperth has issued several notices for rail users today. Most notably, both the Mandurah Line and the Thornlie-Cockburn Line will undergo nightly closures beginning Tuesday evening to facilitate essential maintenance. Train replacement buses will be operational, but passengers should plan for longer journey times than usual. On the Yanchep Line, commuters should check local signage for a temporary platform change scheduled to begin today and continue through Thursday.
There is positive news for the southern corridor with the Armadale Line now fully operational, following its major transformation. The new Byford Station is serving passengers, offering a 39-minute journey to the CBD. To support the growing network, additional services have been added to bus routes 281, 350, 568, 597, and 915, effective from today, Tuesday, 3 March.
Commuter Tips for Today
- Early Peak: Expect typical congestion on the Mitchell Freeway southbound and Kwinana Freeway northbound during the morning peak; use the Smart Freeway gantry signals to help maintain traffic flow.
- Parking Alert: If you use Maylands Station, be aware that car park disruptions begin today, reducing the number of available bays.
- Late Travel: If travelling after 7:00 pm, prioritize using the Transperth JourneyPlanner to navigate the nightly rail closures.
